Program Goal and Learning Objectives:

Program Goal
The goal of this knowledge-based program is to educate health care professionals about the role of incretin-based therapies in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson the pharmacist, pharmacy technician
, nurse, or dietitian will be able to:

  • Explain the role of endogenous incretins in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Discuss the mechanism of action of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors and their therapeutic properties.
  • Describe the mechanism of action and therapeutic properties of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists.
  • List the important patient education messages for incretin-based therapy.
  • Compare GLP-1 agonists and DPP-4 inhibitors with other treatment options for type 2 diabetes.

 

There is a post course assessment and evaluation that must be completed in order to obtain credit for this course.

Scott Drab, PharmD, BS, CDE, BC-ADM

Dr. Drab is an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy and Therapeutics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. Dr. Drab is also a Certified Diabetes Educator and Director of Today University Diabetes Care Associates which serves as a model and prototype for future care centers. He currently serves on several school and university committees including: Experiential Learning Committee, Curriculum Committee, and the Pitt Pathway Committee. He also serves as Faculty Advisor and Liaison between students and the National Community Pharmacists Association.
